The Power of You Teens (POYT) has partnered with Women in Technology to bring PowerGirls an innovative program in STEAM: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics.  “There’s a Tech Movement for Girls and we want our PowerGirls to be ready for 21st Century Careers” said POYT Founder and Executive Director, Felicia Gibson Jaycox.

On Wednesday, July 26 our PowerGirls, ages 11-19, had the wonderful opportunity to join Women in Technology for a Day of STEAM for Girls at Teach for America in NYC.  The goals for the day were to spark a passion in girls for STEAM and provide our PowerGirls the opportunity to engage with women in STEAM careers.

PowerGirls had the opportunity to learn strategy planning & solutions, software engineering & development and technology operations. “My favorite part of the day was learning to build a Lemonade Stand App” said PowerGirl Fatoumata Toure.

Preparing girls for STEAM careers is very important. In the year 2020, there will be 1.4 million jobs opening in computer science. STEAM jobs are high paid, high-skilled in a high growth industry. STEAM education helps girls to develop critical thinking skills needed in the high tech workforce. There is an alarming shortage of female skilled workers and students in STEAM and women make up only 15-25% of the current workforce.

The Power of You Teens is working to bridge this gap. After the workshop, 95% of girls reported they’re more interested in STEAM careers. The Power of You Teens and Women In Technology look forward to bringing PowerGirls more state-of-the-art programs in Technology.
